Hey, thanks for visiting my portfolio! I'm a seasoned developer with 20+ years of experience in LAMP stack development, with an emphasis on front end. I've built more websites than I can possibly remember, and a ton more have been built based off of my code. I've added some of these sites to my portfolio with details, but most of the magic of what I do is in how these sites are built in the admin, rather than just what you see on the live site. I specialize in making sites that can be maintained and edited by clients, rather than making you pay me every time you want to change a phone number. (That being said, I'm always happy to change a phone number for you.)

What I Do

Front End Coding

I'm a front-end expert with knowledge in HTML/CSS in a deep way that makes my code highly reactive, responsive, web accessible, and Google-friendly. That gives me an edge in speed and usability. I'm also a pro with jQuery and JavaScript, though I'm still working towards Node and Angular. I build all of my websites from the ground up and have never relied on 3rd party code, like Bootstrap.

WordPress

I've been working with WordPress for the last 11 years. WordPress was just the CMS that I used to build websites, but it by no means makes me a "WordPress developer." I was building custom themes, with code that I wrote from the ground up - not even borrowing from common skeleton themes like Underscores. I used WordPress in innovative ways that competitors are only just barely catching up to years later.

Web Accessibility/ADA Compliance

In 2017, I attended a conference that introduced me to web accessibility. It quickly became a passion of mine. I dedicated myself to learning as much as I could about building accessible websites - not just because they convert better, or because they're better for SEO, or even because I didn't want my clients to be sued. Because I think it's important that everyone have equal access.

Conversion Rate Optimization

I've learned a lot about Conversion Rate Optimization in the last 5 years. I have more to learn, but I love what I've seen and I apply it to every site I build. CRO is more than just tracking data and interpreting it. It's the art of making a site that users will actually enjoy and find useful. You can see in my more recent projects how CRO directly influences what I do.

Back End Programming

I've worked with PHP since Memorial Day 2001, when I learned it over a 3-day weekend on a dare. You can only imagine how far it's come since then! I currently write PHP 7.4 code for my WordPress themes, but I've also written a lot of customized PHP in recent years to do things ranging from a script that processed huge XML files, to building a client-facing portal for clients to see their project progress.

e-Commerce

I first built online stores using Magento back in the early 2010s. After a handful of sites (and maintaining a couple of high-profile stores) for a few years, I realized that WooCommerce meet our client needs more effectively. I'm now a WooCommerce expert and can build online stores from the most basic to customized. I can also offer advice on which payment processors and shipping methods are the easiest for clients to use.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

More than a decade in digital marketing has taught me a lot about SEO and what it takes to build a site that will be noticed by Google. While I've never been a dedicated SEO tech (too busy building websites!), years of working with pros has taught me how to build sites that are SEO-friendly, anticipate a client's SEO needs, and create content- and code-based strategies for improving search engine visibility.

Servers & Email

During my time at Oozle Media, I had to expand into some areas that I wasn't originally familiar with in order to serve our clients. This included maintaining our company's web server from 2012 to 2021, which meant learning more about CentOS (WHM and cPanel) than I ever thought I'd need. I also learned to troubleshoot a variety of email issues stemming from incorrect DNS, server issues, spam blockers, and more.
